Intel is now shipping Intel® Compiler Professional Editions 11.1 for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. New features include elements of the recently released Intel® Parallel Studio, product support for Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) and updates for integration with Microsoft Visual Studio*, Eclipse*, and Xcode*. The update also incorporates enhancements to the Intel Fortran and C++ compilers, Intel® Math Kernel Library and Intel® Integrated Performance Primitives. Chip Shot: Congrats to Intel®-Leibniz-Challenge Winners

More than 500 schoolchildren, teachers and politicians are celebrating the winners of Intel®-Leibniz-Challenge 2009, announced at Leibniz University Hanover after four months of working on real-life computing-related exercises developed by engineers of Intel in Braunschweig. The winners include four members of the team 'no_name' were honoured by the President of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, receiving an internship at Intel in Braunschweig, grant for Leibniz University Hanover and hardware from Hewlett-Packard. As part of the German Intel Education program, the Intel-Leibniz-Challenge aims to fascinate teenagers about natural sciences and engineering professions. More than 2,200 schoolchildren had registered for this year's edition.

Intel is continuing to expand the limits of supercomputing. According to the 33rd edition of the TOP500 supercomputers list, Intel processors are now inside 399 of the world's top 500 systems, including two in the top ten. Intel-based super computing platforms are playing a pivotal role in a number of research areas, from improving the safety of space exploration to forecasting global climate conditions. The high performance computing (HPC) community is especially enthusiastic about Intel® Xeon® 5500 processor series (formerly code-named Nehalem), which are already driving the research and analytical capabilities of 33 systems on the list despite only being launched four months ago. Chip Shot: Pirai is World's First 1:1 Computing City

Pirai, Brazil has become the first city in the world to adopt 1:1 computing across its school system. The city recently announced the purchase of Intel-powered classmate PCs for students in all of its 21 public schools. The project will include city-wide network connectivity offered through the Digital Pirai Project. Intel will collaborate with local manufacturers and developers to customize the Intel-powered classmate PCs for the schools. This announcement follows several successful Intel-powered classmate PC milestones, including the deployment of half a million units in Portugal, as part of the government's Magellan Initiative.
