Chip Shot: Kids Explore Reefs, Rainforests with Intel-powered classmate PCs

Yesterday, in celebration of National Parent's Day (July 26), Intel hosted its first "Summer Tech Day" at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Parents and children experienced first-hand the hardware and software features of the Intel® Learning Series as they discovered how the convertible classmate PC, purpose-built for K-12 education, offers a mobile and collaborative learning environment. Intel's Jeff Galinovsky and Kapil Wadera were on hand to discuss the WebCam Companion*, ArtRage* and Kidspiration* programs, while children learned about the underwater ecosystem with the kid-friendly PC in hand. Now shipping, it's aimed as a hard drive replacement for PCs and notebooks, delivering the same and in some cases better performance than its 50nm predecessor -- along with up to 60 percent lower prices. Today, Las Vegas residents win big as Clearwire launches its third 4G mobile WiMAX city. Continuing plans to bring WiMAX to 80 markets by end of 2010, the next-generation mobile broadband service is now available to approximately 1.7 million residents across Sin City. Numerous CLEAR-compatible embedded WiMAX laptops and netbooks based on our Intel Core, Atom and Pentium-brands are available directly from their manufacturers or via other channels including Acer, Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Samsung, and Toshiba. Also, starting Aug. 1, Clearwire will also offer a dual-mode 3G/4G modem for customers who travel outside of CLEAR 4G coverage areas that uses Sprint's nationwide 3G network.

The Intel Academic Community and the Brooklyn Technical High School today kicked off the Clubhouse Parallel Universe Boot-Camp, a three-day training for high school whiz kids on how to "think parallel." Historically taught in graduate school, Intel believes that parallel programming should be available in high school to prepare the next generation of innovators for real-world software development. The camp will feature interactive application threading instruction by Intel experts and will conclude with an exclusive presentation by Bank of America's Jeffrey M.
