Chip Shot: Energy Efficient Servers - Intel's ACE in the Hole
To further cut costs associated with cooling the datacenter, Intel today revealed findings from a multi-company study funded by the California Energy Commission. The result is ACE Technology - an intelligent cooling management approach that, for the first time, enables datacenter managers to use existing technology in servers to more precisely control the cooling infrastructure. This innovation to the platform is expected to yield significant efficiencies in data center energy consumption. Even the EPA recognizes the value of the ACE concept and now requires their Energy Star servers to have the temperature and communication components needed for this approach.

Chip Shot: WiMAX Brings City-Wide Wireless Internet to NMU Students
Northern Michigan University students in Marquette, MI. will begin receiving 3,000 laptops with WiMAX cards starting Aug. 20. The students, two-thirds of whom live off campus, will have wireless access anywhere in Marquette without additional cost. The school is one of the first universities in the world with a WiMAX network, which delivers cable and DSL-like speed via a wireless network that can cover entire cities and neighborhoods. As a key contributor to the deployment, Intel was on campus for today's public demonstration of the network.

Chip Shot: Research - How Digital Music Can Fight Climate Change
Intel, Microsoft and Dr. Jonathan Koomey (Lawrence Labs, Stanford University) contend that while tech use grows, technology can make a positive impact on energy consumption. Three research papers were released today - of note is one on mobile devices that will become more power-efficient and ubiquitous, and a paper on music consumption concludes that downloading music yields 40-80% reductions in energy and CO2 compared to buying a CD. Chip Shot: Intel Labs Helps Advance Fashion Industry With Virtual Worlds
Intel Labs have entered into a new research collaboration with the Fashion Research Institute (FRI) to drive innovations that will make it easier for businesses and consumers to make use of virtual worlds. Through this collaboration FRI is providing visually compelling, highly detailed content to aid in Intel’s 3D Internet research and allow the company to learn what will be required in future computers and the next generation of internet software. Virtual worlds could reduce waste significantly in fashion design by eliminating the cost and materials needed to create and re-create prototypes until they are correct. They also allow the designer and manufacturer to review designs together in a virtual space over great distances. Read more here.
