U.S. goverment gets money back from banks

The government received about $4 billion from eight of the biggest banks
and another $35 million from the smaller banks, The New York Times
reported, citing calculations prepared for the newspaper by University
of Louisiana at Lafayette Professor Linus Wilson.

Bank failures tripled in a year
|

Most of the banks that failed this year are small, regional banks that
fell victim to losses on real estate and consumer loans when
unemployment surged to a 25-year high. However, many large institutions
closed in 2009, a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation spokesman said.
