Chip Shot: WiMAX Global Footprint Expands. Next Up, Russia.

Today in Moscow, Intel joined Yota to help introduce mobile WiMAX 4G embedded notebooks from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung and Toshiba as two of Russia's largest cities - Moscow and St. Petersburg - now have WiMAX wireless broadband Internet access. The two Russian cities now have the leading, most advanced technology where 3G networks aren't even available, leap-frogging a technology generation with the ability to leverage 4G services. Yota is expecting to deploy WiMAX network and services in over 40 Russian cities. Recently, Yota and HTC also introduced the world's first hand held tri-mode WiMAX-enabled Smartphone, loaded with applications and embedded voice and data services and targeted for use over the impressive Yota 4G WiMAX network. Delivering affordable, super-fast mobile broadband to its citizens is just one more proof point that WiMAX continues to accelerate broadband capabilities in both emerging and mature countries around the world.

Chip Shot: Study - Consumers Find Internet TV Valuable

Broadband has revolutionized media consumption in the home. Recent research conducted by The Diffusion Group (TDG) found that 76 percent of consumers would value having an Internet-connected TV experience. "TV Widgets," made possible through a new software framework called Widget Channel, are small Internet icons that scroll across the bottom of the TV screen. Chip Shot: Intel Employee Volunteers Add $4 Million to Non-Profits

To celebrate Intel's 40th anniversary in 2008, employees volunteered 1.3 million hours at schools and non-profits, and earned around 1,400 non-profits and non-governmental agencies cash grants totaling $4 million. "Intel employees get to give twice - through their volunteer efforts following their passion and through the matching grants from the Intel Foundation," said Shelly Esque, vice president. Today, the Ethisphere Institute recognized companies that demonstrate leadership in ethical business practices in its third-annual "World's Most Ethical Companies" List. Over 10,000 companies were evaluated for this distinction, and Intel was one of 99 global companies recognized for its ethical business standards, corporate citizenship and also for introducing innovative ideas which benefit the public. Chip Shot: Intel's Barrett Announces Vietnamese Engineering Scholars

Dr. Craig Barrett, Chairman of Intel Corp., today announced details of 28 Vietnamese engineering students who have been awarded scholarships under the $2.24m Intel Vietnam Study Abroad Program. The students will study at Portland State University during the academic years 2009-11. The program supports Vietnam's objective of fostering national competitiveness through investments in talent development.

Chip Shot: Sub 25-Watt Xeon to Enter Embedded Market in 2010

At IDF Beijing, Pat Gelsinger disclosed that Intel's embedded business division will be offering Nehalem EP-based Intel® Xeon® processors - codenamed Jasper Forest - in early 2010 with 7-year long lifecycle support. The processors are designed specifically for embedded, communications and storage applications, such as ultra-dense blades, NAS and SAN, to deliver optimal performance per watt and high integration of I/O and memory for reduced real estate. Jasper Forest will be offered in single-, dual- or quad-core designs; ranging from 23- to 85- watts. Learn more here.
